Simple past tense berfungsi untuk menyatakan suatu kejadian / peristiwa di masa lampau. Seperti tense lainnya, simple past tense terbagi menjadi 2, yaitu nominal sentece dan verbal sentence.

Rumus verbal sentence menggunakan kata kerja :
(+) S + V2
(-) S + did not + V1
(?) Did + S + V1 ?

Sementara nominal sentence menggunakan tobe bentuk past.
(+) S + was/were + O/C
(-) S + was/were not + O/C
(?) Was/were + S + O/C ?

Ex : Verbal
(+) I wrote your name in the death note
(-) I didn't write your name in the death note
(?) Did I write your name in the death note?

Nominal
